Where does AI actually live? Not in the sky, and mostly not in your phone. When you ask a question, it races through glass cables as light to a data center: a giant building full of servers and high-speed processor chips (GPUs/TPUs). They get hot, so fans and cool water keep them comfy, and all that thinking uses lots of power and cooling. Then your answer zips back in a second or two. Hard AI, simple words.

Quick facts for grown-ups
- Light in fiber-optic cables travels about 200,000 km per second, fast enough to go around the Earth about five times in one second.
- One AI data center campus being built in Louisiana is planned at about 4 million square feet, almost 70 football fields (Louisiana Economic Development).
- Servers and their chips use most of a data center’s power. Cooling (fans, air handling and water loops) uses much of the rest.
Talk about it: Ask your kid, “Where did your last AI question go?” Then sketch the trip together: phone → cables → data center → back.
