What is AI? Flappy’s Robot Helper

Episode 1 · 3:32 · Watch together, then try the mission below.

Grown-ups: get new episodes first by following Flappy on Instagram or YouTube.

A surprise box from Mayor Aden holds Bolt, a little helper robot. Flappy teaches Bolt with fish and snowball pictures. Then Bolt calls a fluffy white cat a “snowball”! More examples fix it.

What you’ll learn

  • AI learns from examples, like a little kid learns “dog” by seeing lots of dogs.
  • AI can be wrong, so people check its work.
  • AI is a helper, not the boss. You make the choices.
  • Flappy Safety Rule: never tell an AI your name, where you live or your secrets.

Mission: Teach a Family Robot

  1. Prepare. Print the two-page mission. A grown-up cuts out the mixed cards; add drawings or read the words aloud.
  2. Teach. A grown-up plays the robot. Use the six teaching cards in the guide and label each snack or not snack.
  3. Test something new. Keep four cards unseen until the first test. Record the robot’s first guesses in the table on page 2.
  4. Try a tricky example. Draw a toy cookie. Talk about which clues helped and which could mislead the robot.
  5. Improve and retest. Add a helpful example, then make a new test card. Learning one corrected answer is not proof of learning the rule.

What you’ll see: helpful, varied examples can improve guesses. Test new examples to see what your robot still gets wrong. Big question: Can you explain it to someone at home?
